Showers in Jacksonville, Fl: Affordably convert your shower/tub to an easy entry shower in JUST ONE DAY!

Home Sweet Accessible Home is a remodeling company specializing in remodeling for all ages and abilities.  We enjoy helping our clients create safe, comfortable and beautiful spaces within their homes to remain independent and active.  Pictured above is a sample of a few of our most recent accessible shower remodels completed right here in Jacksonville, Fl.  (Click on each image for a larger view).

As we age, a loss of balance or unexpected health issue can prevent us from easily entering or exiting the bathtub or shower area.  Home Sweet Accessible Home’s Lifetime Showers by Best Bath Systems,  (a leader for over 40 years in the commercial safe bathing industry), are the perfect solution if you are considering remodeling your current bathtub or shower to open it up and make it safer, modern and easily accessible.  These are commercial quality showers, 100% made in the USA and built to withstand rugged use in typical hospital or assisted living communities.

Home Sweet Accessible Home owner, Scott Ross was introduced to these handicap accessible showers almost 7 years ago when he installed them inside custom homes within the Fleet Landing Retirement Community in Atlantic Beach.  He knew private homeowners would LOVE how easy these showers are to install, (most take just ONE day including the removal of the old shower/tub area).  These showers come fully equipped with grab bars that are custom placed for each client, a retractable padded shower seat that tucks out of the way when not in use, a hand held shower control that can be placed wherever the client is most comfortable, and a barrier-free, no threshold entry with a rubber water stopper and weighted shower curtain.  The shower floor is even with the bathroom floor which makes entry with a wheelchair or without, simple and hassle free.

Home Sweet Accessible Home’s handicap accessible showers also come in a variety of color options, with tons of choices in colorful accent tiles like this one, below.

ShowerwithAccentGreenTile

You can also add a customizable mosaic accent tile of your choice inside the shower.  We love helping our clients get creative and pick out glass or stone mosaics to add a little punch to the bathroom shower like this one.

ShowerwithTileAccent

We can also use the Lifetime Shower floor base and add a ceramic tile or stone of choice to the outside walls (shown below).  This is an option for those who desire tile but need the accessiblity and barrier free options available with the accessible shower units.  This is a really popular application for those who live on the second floor of a condo/building as it prevents the need to rip up the shower floor to make it wheelchair accessible or barrier free. By using this Best Bath shower floor base,  we can save our clients the added expense and extended time remodeling.

Open and Easy Access Shower

Home Sweet Accessible Home also builds custom accessible showers like these recent shower and bathroom remodeling projects completed in Jacksonville, (pictured below).  HSAH uses the latest techniques in waterproofing barrier free shower areas and Universal Design techniques, such as linear drain systems (allows the slope of the shower floor to move in one direction, making it safer and easier to step in and out).

Showers for Easy Access; Affordable Handicap Wheelchair Accessible Shower Remodel by Home Sweet Accessible Home

AccessibleShower2

Today we’re featuring one of our favorite products, our completely wheelchair accessible shower units.  These commercial grade showers are constructed right here in the USA by Best Bath Systems of Boise, Idaho, a family owned company innovating safe bathing products for hospitals, retirement communities and private homes for over 40 years.  Scott was introduced to their quality products years ago while building a retirement community and knew our clients living at home would LOVE this product.  The biggest advantage of this product is the fact that we are able to remove the old shower/tub area down to the studs and remodel/replace it with a brand new accessible shower in JUST ONE DAY.   This handicap accessible shower unit is perfect for those who find it becoming more and more difficult to maneuver into their current bathtub or shower because of a threshold barrier as they enter.  This product removes all barriers and step overs and even allows for one to roll a wheelchair directly in for easy transfer onto the padded seat.

AccessibleSHower6Home Sweet Accessible Home barrier-free  shower units come in over 400 configurations depending on the size and shape of your shower/bath area and come complete with 2 custom fit grab bars, a retractable shower seat, rubber water stopper on the shower floor edge,  weighted shower curtain and easy access hand shower controls.  All of these items can be installed as needed should one’s condition change over time.

bestBathshowerKBISYou can also have a little fun and customize your accessible shower by adding colored tiles within the design or by adding an accent mosaic tile like this one (pictured right).  We love helping our clients choose designs and options that fit best for their personal style and help them create a bathroom shower that is not only safe and comfortable for them, but also aesthetically pleasing and well designed to fit within the style of their home.

Home Sweet Accessible Home; Affordable Remodeling Specialists for Seniors and the Disabled in Jacksonville, Fl

It’s been a busy several months at Home Sweet Accessible Home, remodelers specializing in home modifications for seniors and the disabled here in Jacksonville, Fl.

Scott and I have been truly blessed to be able to share our passion for helping people to stay in the home they love for as long as they choose to be there.  Whether it’s grab bars, an entry ramp, stairlift, walk-in bathtub, wheelchair or handicapped accessible shower, in-law suite or whole house remodel,  all our projects bring safety, independence and joy to our clients– and that makes everything we do really matter!   As a way to give JohnHayesback to this fantastic community,  we’ve dedicated a portion of our time and investment this year on several not for profit projects which align with our mission for helping seniors and the disabled.  In March we helped complete the build of a brand new completely accessible home, (pictured right),  for severely injured Marine, GySgt John Hayes in St. Augustine, Fl with the amazing organization, Homes For Our Troops. This is our second wheelchair accessible home with Homes for Our Troops (the first was for Cpl Tyler Southern who lives next door), and we cannot even express how much this project touched our hearts.  We are so grateful for their service and it just feels good to be able to be a very small part in saying THANK YOU for protecting our freedom.

In April we completed a fully accessible bathroom project for a local high school coach suffering from ALS with Builder’s Care (the not-for-profit arm of Northeast Florida Builders’ Association).  This 1 week bathroom remodeling project was a collaborative effort from a variety of building professionals within NEFBA, donating their time and materials.  Opening up this bathroom and making it accessible enabled this local coach to bathe in less than a half hour verses the previous 2 hour or more process with his previous bathroom set-up.  His wife expressed how wonderful it was to easily wheel him in and out and to finish bathing without being completely exhausted from the process. We LOVE that!

In April we were invited to speak about Universal Design and the latest innovations in remodeling for seniors and the disabled at the 2013 Fair Housing Symposium hosted by the City of Jacksonville Human Right’s Commission.  We enjoyed speaking with the community about all the latest handicapped remodeling innovations and safe bathing products now available in Jacksonville through Home Sweet Accessible Home.  We also spent time in May talking about bathroom and kitchen remodeling with the residents of Coquina Crossing Retirement Community and with our friends at Brooks Rehabilitation.

Scott talking remodeling for seniors and the disabled at Coquina Crossing.

It’s been a fantastic and very busy 2013 so far,…so many new items to share and we will continue to blog about them here so stay tuned.   Right now we will share one of our latest innovations that our clients LOVE in place of the basic walk-in bathtubs currently on the market.  This is our ADL Spa,.. it’s a new safe bathing tub which is wheelchair and even lift accessible if needed (lift can store easily beneath the tub)

We removed a traditional step over tub with our ADL Spa which allows for easy entry and exit.

We removed a traditional step over tub with our ADL Spa which allows for easy entry and exit.

The benefit of this tub is that it is installed at a seated height with a sliding door, which enables our clients to easily transfer from a wheelchair . Our clients simply sit and slide themselves in.  There is no stepping into the tub and it uses less water than a regular walk-in bathtub.

This is just one of MANY safe bathing options we have brought and continue to bring to Jacksonville to prevent falls and help people to stay living safely and comfortably at home.  Scott and I thank you so much for following us and reading this far!

BEFORE and AFTER; Gorgeous Bathroom Remodeling Project in Jacksonville

BEFORE; Old, cramped bathroom needing remodeling!

This is the BEFORE of one of our most recent Home Sweet Accessible Home Jacksonville remodeling projects.  Pictured here is the original master bathroom with a very narrow entry door and dated design.  The existing bathroom had a few updates over the years, but our clients desired a more modern look, an entire bathroom remodel including a larger, more open and accessible bathroom for their master bedroom.

AFTER: New bathroom remodel sink/vanity area

Now take a look at the AFTER photos,…(click on images for larger view).  Because the existing space was so small, we decided to utilize the clients’ over-sized walk in closet area to create an entirely new, modern bathroom with all the accessibility features they desired.  We love the gorgeous blue/gray/brown accent tile behind the mirrors which add height and interest to the space.  Notice the under-cabinet lighting at the bottom.  This Universal Design feature, (design  for all ages and abilities), lights up the floor for functionality as well as casting a warm glow onto the floor.  We’ve added this feature in both kitchens and baths and resoundingly we hear from our clients how much that one detail adds to the look and feel of their newly remodeled space!

AFTER; Open Concept Shower, new bathroom remodel

Here’s the AFTER of the new shower area.  This is now an open and airy shower with plenty of space and lighting.  Notice the wall niche, an option we love to incorporate into our designs as it keeps shampoos, soaps, etc stored within the wall and custom placed to fit the height that works best for our clients.  We also added a custom bench seat covered in a coordinating Corian solid surface material, perfect for sitting and utilizing the hand shower attachment for those who prefer to be seated when showering.

AFTER; Bathroom Remodel Shower floor; linear drain

Here’s a closer shot of the shower floor.  We utilized a Schluter waterproofing wall and shower floor system and a Schluter linear drain.  This revolutionary product creates a water tight floor and shower wall membrane and comes with a 5 year material and labor warranty which is the first of it’s kind in the construction business. The benefits of using this system is the elimination of mold issues beneath the tile surface.  The linear drain on the shower floor allows an even slope in just one direction (traditional shower floors slope in all directions to a center drain),..this linear drain creates a more stable shower floor to walk on or to wheel a chair into.

AFTER; Bathroom Remodel Vanity/Dressing Area

Finally, check out the unique dressing/makeup vanity on the opposite wall from the shower. We maximized the natural light coming in from the shower window by installing glass on either side of the vanity mirror.  Our clients are thrilled with how this particular design came to life!

Jacksonville Remodeling; Accessible Showers for All Ages and Abilities

This is our latest accessible shower remodel project in the Sweetwater Retirement Community in Jacksonville.  The existing bathroom in this home was much like a typical new home– a master bath with a standard garden tub adjacent to a separate, smaller shower.  Our clients rarely used the bathtub and thinking ahead on the progression of existing health issues, they decided they needed to create a more accessible bathing situation in their bathroom.   The final plans were drawn to remove the old bathtub and small shower and in their place install one large walk-in shower area that would be completely accessible for wheelchair access down they road.  This shower is a perfect example of what we call Universal Design,..design that works for all ages and abilities, meaning anyone from child to adult to senior, can enjoy a shower comfortably.

The first photo above highlights the shower area,..complete with a Rain shower head and a separate hand shower should the client decide to sit while showering down the road.  We installed low wall niches on both sides of the shower to allow easy reach for shampoo/soap.

The second photo demonstrates a new innovation in accessibility remodeling,..the linear drain in the shower floor.  Typical drains are located in the center of the shower,..with the floor sloping in from all directions,..creating an uneven surface.  The linear drain allows you to place the drain on one side,..sloping the floor in only one direction,..making the surface of the floor much safer to navigate when wet and slippery.  This option also allows you to use larger floor tiles if you prefer.

In the third photo– is the Invisia Serena Seat.  Our clients love this seat as it is securely fastened into the wall and can fold up easily when not in use.  This particular area is designed for the client to sit while undressing/dressing.  Above the seat we also installed an in-wall space heating system for the client to use while sitting in the area to undress or after the shower to dry off.

This accessible shower is a great example of how “accessibility ” or “handicapped remodeling” as it’s sometimes called,..doesn’t have to look clinical or like a hospital environment.  We love that our clients had fun picking out the fixtures and tile that fit their style.  Now they have a master bathroom for a lifetime of living in their new home.

Walk-in Bathtubs and Accessibility Remodeling at the 2011 Jacksonville Home and Patio Show

We just completed our very first Jacksonville Home and Patio Show!  What a fantastic show it was–we really met some wonderful folks at our booth!  Thank you to all who stopped by to check out our handicap accessible shower units and our walk-in bathtubs!

Accessible Bathroom Remodeling in Jacksonville has never been easier or more affordable! It’s a very exciting time as we introduce new products and innovations to our area.  (Pictured above left is our owner and Certified Residential Contractor and Certified Aging in Place Specialist, Scott Ross,  in our booth explaining all the benefits of our Best Bath walk-in bathtubs).

We met  many seniors who are seeking ideas for their homes in Jacksonville and would like to consider long-term planning, particularly in bathroom remodeling.  Our beautiful commercial- quality accessible shower units –which can come with grab bars and seating that can be installed at a later date (as needed)–are the perfect solution!

We also met many folks with varying disabilites from MS  to Muscular Distrophy, and even those whose family members recently suffered strokes or have a recent ALS diagnosis.  We introduced them to many brand new mobility products and home design ideas they’d never seen before that can help with the day to day tasks within the home., many with very little disruption and with an installation time of just one day.

It truly was a whirlwind of a weekend at our first show and although we are exhausted from the experience of preparation, set up and tearing down,.. we are truly energized by the fact that we are able to talk with and assist so many people in bathroom and kitchen remodeling,…assisting them to bathe safer,  increase mobility throughout the house,…and ultimately live more comfortably in the home they love!  That’s what we LOVE about what we do and we have a passion for problem solving!

Stylish accessibility at home in Jacksonville; Grab bars that don’t look like grab bars!

Our previous blog on the new products we’re bringing to Jacksonville for home accessibility was such a hit, we thought we’d introduce you to a few more!

These beautiful accessories are also from HealthCraft, this time from their Invisia Collection.  They’re all actually grab bars which can hold up to 350 lbs in weight capacity, come in 3 finishes and a great example of Universal Design (design for people of all ages and abilities).  A wonderful way to introduce accessibility in your bathroom without sacrificing style.

The wall mounting areas are virtually invisible and have a multi-contact wall support system.  While two-point contact with the wall structure is standard for most support rails and bathroom accessories, much of the Invisia Collection overachieves with up to 4 points of contact for maximum structural support.  The soap dish, corner shelf and toilet roll holder all feature beautiful shatterproof Corian surfaces that resist the growth of mold and bacteria.

Our personal favorite?  The toilet roll/grab bar with it’s super functional design–it conveniently stores 2 extra rolls!

For more information on safe bathing products like these or any other products and services we offer,  give us at call at 342-6844 and we’d be happy to chat!  Thanks so much for reading our blog and don’t forget to connect with us on our Facebook page for special discounts, remodeling tips and project photos!

Here’s to continued comfort and safe bathing in your home sweet home!
